Everything I Read in 2024

In 2023, I set out to read 40 books in a year. While I met my goal, I swung into the habit of picking up the shortest books and quickest reads possible. In 2024, I set a looser “goal.” No specific book or page numbers. Instead, I simply tried to stay hungry and keep up the good habit of reading.

I managed 30 books, and I’m still trying to polish one more before the year ties off. While I thought about ranking them all, I could only manage my top ten. The rest follow in alphabetical order by author.

Thanks for indulging my reading list, friends. Confession: I made this more to geek out for myself, so my apologies if it reads a little self-indulgent. I hope it proves interesting, or maybe even helpful as you look for something to read in the new year.

Top 10

1. Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom by John O’Donohue

This book gave me a new spiritual geography. I began it early on in 2024 and it truly shaped my year. O’Donohue gave new definition to my friendships, gatherings, and even served as comfort as I watched my grandfather enter his final months.

2. The Crane Wife by CJ Hauser

I return often to CJ Hauser’s essays, sometimes in memory and sometimes literally sifting through the pages. Hauser helped me feel more at home in my body and opened up new possibilities to what a non-binaried parenthood could look like. Oh, and their essays that mention teaching are priceless.

3. Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton

A thriller featuring anarchist gardeners in New Zeeland. Need I say more? So far I’ve convinced 4 folks to read this page-turner. I refuse to stop evangelizing this book.
