Dear friends,
Thank you. My post earlier this month about lifting up queer stories and participating in resistance received such an outpour of affirmation and support. Since announcing my project, I’ve received messages from a number of nonbinary parents, all brave internet strangers, who expressed interest in sharing their experiences in parenthood.
Thus far, I’ve shared phone calls with two folks and am thrilled to enter into deeper conversation with them (and hopefully others soon). I’m still simmering on how to share this project along the way. On the one hand, I want to share every bit with this sweet community on Substack. But I also know this is a project that will take time and perspective. And I’ll also be working alongside the parents after our conversation to see what they are comfortable sharing out with a wider audience. Voice of Witness has an incredible set of Ethical Storytelling Principles that I’ve adapted for this project to ensure those sharing their stories have autonomy over their words. These stories will need to simmer. But I look forward to sharing taste tests along the way.
Currently I’m working on a “Chapter One” of sorts. It situates itself mostly within the personal (my own experiences and wonderings), while also straddling the perspective of the bigger picture. For my paid subscribers, I’ll include a raw and rough sample at the end of this post.
