What the heck are Mackerel Skies?

You know those days you look into the sky and see a bunch of wispy clouds stacked close together? Those are mackerel skies. There’s even an old rhyme about them.

Mackerel sky

Mackerel sky

Never long wet

Never long dry

The phrase basically means that a change in weather is coming, signaled by the mackerel sky. I like the idea of mackerel skies, of change in the air.

Shapeshifting Newsletter, Shapeshifting Self

This newsletter has changed a decent bit over the years. I initially shared my adventures of hiking and birding in Michigan, but these Mackerel Skies have since taken on a more reflective and personal tone. Since replanting myself in the soils of North Carolina, I’ve used this place to share my internal musings with my dearest pals.

I still often mull over my wardens of nature. The fig tree on my porch and my trusty mutt Fitz are often recurring characters here. Mackerel Skies also serves as the place where I’ve begun to share my latest art practice: natural dyeing and quilting.

Stay up-to-date

My hope is for this to remain a place of evolution. If you’re willing to join me in my introspection and musings, I’d love to see you subscribe.

If you subscribe, you won’t have to worry about checking in on this webpage. Every newsletter will zip directly to your inbox. Neat!
